Mixing It Up GLOकAL Style

Everyone is looking to create a name in an otherwise stagnant F & B business and after the crop of Microbreweries, the next in line was Molecular Gastronomy.

Though it is hard to miss Gloकal Junction on 12th Main Indira Nagar, I have always thought it is one of those places trying to fit into the current theme of things and thereby avoided visiting till recently.

On my visit, I had the opportunity to have a look at their menu and did find it to be very interesting which seems to provide the experience of global cuisine with local touches and vice versa.

I had always thought of this as a bar and it came as a surprise to me that the menu here is different for lunch and dinner providing an all day dining experience combined with a nightclub. A very good concept to be followed wherein one can hang out with friends or family during the day and turns into a high energy lounge experience at sundown.

The location of this lounge is a big plus being on 12th Main Indira Nagar opposite other well known restaurants and pubs but manages to holds its own due to their uniqueness and overall experience provided.

The layout is massive spanning over 5000 sq. ft. offering two levels of seating offering comfy black couches and metal framed chairs, both almost similar in experience. Both floors have their bar at the centre providing a good view of the mixologist’s skills.

The walls are covered with rustic looking tiles with the dominant shade here being black and the remaining area is mostly occupied by glass. The lighting is minimal though it is completely different experience here by day when compared to night.

One of the unique feature of this place is their cutlery housed in an aluminum tool box setup with eating tools comprising of forks, spoons and knives having spanner, wrench and pliers on the other end.

The bar at Glocal Junction has an interesting menu keeping in mind the fact that people nowadays are looking for something different but are still local by heart and enjoy that desi/global twist.

So getting down to one of things which powers this place and it is without doubt their innovative and quirky cocktails.

Bouquet: This cocktail is made of Absolut Kurrant mixed with Passion fruit and edible flowers. Though there is emphasis on the presentation by the burning of the rosemary, the drink itself is on the sweeter side considering the kurrant already imparts a sweet though tarty black current flavour. This one is for the ones who like their cocktails a bit on the sweet side.

Toxic Box: The cocktail of my choice turned out to be reminiscent of vodka with touches of Far Eastern flavours. This is more of an acquired taste.

Strawberry Margarita:  One of the simpler cocktails though well prepared here.

Smoreass: A cocktail which looks deceptive but packs quite a punch with its concotion of whisky and baileys, with addtional touches of banana, chocolate dust and burnt marshmallow.

Mirage: Another vodka based cocktail served in a neat looking pineapple jar more on the lemony side.

Black Magic:  This was the show off cocktail of the meal with smoked whisky poured on a ball of orange zest. This was my best cocktail of the lot.

Glocal LIITs come in 500 ml and 1000 ml quantities and are quite different from the old fashioned LIIT we have everywhere. They have GLIIT Festival ongoing hence there are more than those mentioned in the regular menu, just ask your bartender!

Lucifer Fab GLIIT:  An interesting LIIT though a bit on the sweet side.

Mama Miya Banana GLIIT: A very innovative LIIT with the flavour of banana perfecting blending with the spirits.

MOCKTAILS:

They also have a pleasing selection of mocktails to choose from and the among below options the Kokum Desi Cooler is a must try.

APPETIZERS:

Mushroom Malai Wasabi Chilli – An interesting combo of mushrooms filled with wasabi drizzled with cheese.

LGBT Prawns – It took me a while to get over the pun intended with the name but I must say good things come in mixed packages ( pun definitely intended!).

MAIN COURSE:

Just like the drinks, the food also has a day and night avatar with focus on the overall food experience during the day and on starters at night.

The food menu at Glocal Junction is a combination of global as well as local cuisines with a fun and urban twist of flavours thereby offering their patrons dishes in a Gloकal avatar!

NON VEG:

Half Roast Bird:  Roast chicken soaked in gravy served with mashed potato and saute veggies. The sauce was definitely the show stopper here though I must mention the overall dish is still quite simple and delicious.

Moroccan Baked Fish – Another interesting twist to a fish dish and I really liked the whole idea of serving coriander flavoured rice. One of those Gloकal dishes!

VEG:

Farmers Delight –  A name which does not tell you much and sounds pretty ordinary. However the pizza is a definite delight with the crunchiness of the broccoli taking pizza to a whole new level.

Biryani Risotto – I was not too sure what to expect from a risotto made with biryani flavours. The Chef has truly outdone himself as he has been able to enthrill my tastebuds and of my fellow foodies to the extent we asked for another plate of the same.

Cottage Cheese Steak:  Simple yet light though the sides were quite filling in itself.

Tawa Pulao – A completely unassuming pulao which has no takers but once everyone got a spoon of it, it vanished in a jiffy. It is the simple dishes like these which test a Chef’s skills and I must mention it was one of the best pulao’s I have been served.

DESSERTS:

I have heard about their interesting desserts and I am thrilled to say they did not disappoint!

Kalkatta Paan Cheese Cake – Cheesecake filled into a paan which has an inner chocolate coating is imagination at its best. If you love cheesecake and a pan lover then you cannot leave here without trying this.

Baked Filter Kapi – If you love your coffee especially truly south indian style filter kapi then this dessert takes you to coffee heaven and back. Behind all that froth is a mouth watering kapi baked dessert.

Firni Cream Brulee – Every dessert I tried so far has a desi twist so why not the creme brulee. Hence a rice dessert in creme brulee style. Though not a fan of milk dishes, the dessert was light and mildly sweet.

Waffle Brownie – Simple and heartwarming dessert for the simpler souls who do not want to experiment.

Call it casual, all day dining, bar, night club – what impresses me the most is taste be it the beverages or the food and this all in one resto bar has definitely created a lasting impression.

Gloकal Junction are here to stay and I look forward to more from these guys in the coming years.
