Authentic Pan Asian Flavours @ Misu

There’s always a new place in town but if it is anything to do with Asian food then I definitely take notice. Though I am not a regular to St.Marks road except for the occasional lunch, I am yet to visit The Open Box which have rave reviews. Misu is located on the same floor as The Open Box and I was surprised to hear it is the same team which runs the show.

The latest entry into the Pan Asian restaurant scene, Misu is a 45-50 seater charming and chic little gourmet haven located right in the heart of Bangalore on St. Marks Road. The restaurant while being pan asian does dive right into the flavours of Asian cuisine including Japan, China and most of South East Asia.

The ambience spells understated elegance with its minimalistic lighting, mirrors on the ceiling, subtle music and would set the tone for a lovely night out.

The menu is a diverse collection of all the cuisines I have come to love and there’s something about these dishes which I know I can be happy eating without worrying about my diet. Luckily enough the menu does not have just the usual dumplings and pad thai but also some different though very country specific dishes which you normally would not get to see in the usual Pan Asian fare around this city.

Our meal began with a light and refreshing gin and cranberry based cocktail, Soho Sunset and a rum cocktail, The Monkey for the hubby.  Both these signature cocktails were excellent though the latter packs quite a punch. We savoured this with a plate of Drunken beef which was heavenly with its sauces oozing flavours.

Spicy Pomelo Salad
A dish recommended by the staff was the Spicy Pomelo Salad which I didn’t give much thought as I was not a big fan of this particular fruit. But every such thought vanished with the first taste of this unassuming salad mixed with cashews and spices and I just could not have enough of it. This dish is definitely a must try here and I promise you will love it.

Tempura Prawns
Moving on to some sea food appetizers were the Tempura Prawns which had just the right amount of crispness and with the chilli paste makes it a great appetizer with your drink.

Ikan Pepe
An interesting starter was a banana leaf wrapped Indonesian grilled fish called Ikan Pepe and the flavours of this simple dish with ginger and chilli was absolutely spot on.

Fried Red Snapper with Thai Herbs

Another highly recommended dish was the Fried Red Snapper with Thai Herbs which was a steamed fish topped with fresh thai herbs. This dish reminded of the food served in the local areas of Thailand with its particular smells which would put off someone not used to such food. While my dinner companions did not want to try this dish, I knew this is something I would like and dug in.

Soft Shell Crab with Garlic Pepper

To end our seafood fiesta was the Soft Shell Crab with Garlic Pepper which was prepared so well while you crunch into the crab you can get a combination of flavors from the pepper, garlic and chillies.

Rainbow Dumplings

There is no Asian meal without dumplings for me and we tried the Rainbow Dumplings Moonshine Dumplings and Jade Dumplings. The Rainbow dumplings, I understand is a crowd favourite here and after trying them I now know why. Each little parcel is so beautifully wrapped with stuffings which make you go a bit crazy and vocal with sounds.

The Moonshine Dumplings and Jade Dumplings though vegetarian were equally pleasing and well liked.

Spicy Tofu Avacado Maki

Thanks to the vegetarians at our table, we also tried the Spicy Tofu Avacado Maki which did not do much for me as I am more of a seafood sushi person though it was well liked in the group.

Bok Choy and Mushrooms

After all these starters, I was craving for a lighter dish and was served the Bok Choy and Mushrooms which turned out to be well prepared though I felt the Bok Choy was completely shadowed by the mushroom and sauces.

The Kampai “Cheers”

While we took a break from all the above dishes, we tried a few more beverages from their interesting range of cocktails, mocktails and iced teas. The Kampai “Cheers” , a signature blend of vodka, lychee and lime was light and more of day drink in my opinion.

Krapow

We decided to order just a few mains, Hainanese Chicken Rice, Krapow and Wok Fried Rice (veg).

Krapow

I absolutely loved the Krapow which is a shredded chicken stir fried with chilli garlic basil sauce and served with sticky jasmine rice. This dish is so authentic in its flavours that the memories still gives me the jitters.

Hainanese Chicken Rice

The Hainanese Chicken Rice is a complete meal in one dish containing steamed chicken slices, rice, chicken soup and side sauces. Once again an authentic dish though many here would consider it too bland for their palate.

Wok Fried Rice

The Wok Fried Rice was light and soothing way to end your meal.

Singapore Style Ice Cream Sandwich

Though we had no room for any more food, we knew we had to give in to a dessert and ended our meal with their special Singapore Style Ice Cream Sandwich.  Though not a first for me, I did like their use of Lemongrass and Green Tea flavours in the dessert.

Japanese Souffle Cheesecake

Sometimes it is the simpler desserts which steal your heart and in this case it was the Japanese Souffle Cheesecake. The cheesecake literally melts in your mouth and was over with seconds. With room for no more, our attendant insisted we try their Chocolate Truffles which turned out to explode a gamut of flavours in the mouth with the chilli doing the honours!

In a city serving Indo Chinese as Chinese, there are very few who know and relish the actual flavours of Pan Asian food. I have a special love for authentic Pan-Asian food and Misu is definitely one of the most authentic restaurants in Bangalore.
