Who can say no to a whole meal in a bowl and that’s the trend nowadays though many have failed to appeal. These all in one meal bowls are making a comeback be it a healthy breakfast version or a whole meal. SodaBottleOpenerWala, Bangalore’s only and crowd favourite Irani Cafe recently collaborated with well known food consultant and blogger, Rushina Munshaw Ghildiyal to launch their version of comfort food bowls by way of their Bombay Buddha Bowls.
The concept of Buddha Bowls curated by Ms.Rushina and Chef Danesh Vakshoor are basically single portion meals piled up to the brim in a bowl. The 4 Buddha Bowls – 2 vegetarian and 2 non vegetarian – consists of dishes special to the different communitites in Bombay, thereby the name.
The Sindhi community love their food and it cannot get more comforting than a Sindhi Kadhi. The bowl has my favourite “brown rice” along with sai bhaji, aloo tuk, papad pasta, teewan papad samosa and leafy greens come together in a delightful Sindhi Kadhi sauce garnished with guvar, bhindi and bhee crunchies and boondi.
This bowl as Rushina called the “Gujarati Pasta” was her comfort food as a child which consists of fenugreek and potato stuffed ravioli dhoklis accompanied with a wilted onion salad, greens, boria marcha drizzle and a candied peanut relish combined with a delicious dal along with a papad cheese crumble. Definitely my idea of comfort food on any day.
EAST INDIAN BOWL
This bowl was my pick among the Buddha bowls inspired by Bandra’s East Indian food culture was conceived by Chef Danesh Vakshoor. This bowl consists of Wedding rice and Pork vindaloo along with a crunchy Bombil fry, delicious golden fried Chicken potato chops topped with kanji vegetable curry with sautéed carrots and greens with an unassuming papaya pickle which blew my mind (in the best way possible!).
I did not get a chance to try the Maharashtrian Bowl which sounds as good as the above bowls. Inspired by the Maharashtrian cuisine this bowl consists of red rice, savoury and spicy prawn modaks, coconut salad, leafy greens and jalwa chutney tossed in a Koli fish curry sauce topped with peanut thencha and poha papad.
