I was recently invited for the launch of The Pilates Studio in Cunningham Road, Bangalore and knowing my curiosity when it comes to anything fitness related, I just couldnt miss the opportunity to learn more. Pilates has been the preferred choice of exercise for many for the past few years but it has only gained popularity over the last few years thanks to who’s who of Bollywood such as Jacqueline Fernandez, Malaika Arora, Varun Dhawan who have begun using Pilates to stay fit.
Originally founded by Joseph H. Pilates, Pilates primary purpose was intended to strengthen the human mind and body. The Stott Pilates is a newer version of the original Pilates method developed by Lindsay and Moira Merrithew. The Stotts method is a contemporary approach to the original exercise method which follows five basic principles of breathing, pelvic placement, rib case placement, scapular movement, and head and cervical spine placement with emphasizes on the correct form. The equipment used in the Stott Pilates method is the Reformer which is a horizontal carriage that glides forward and backward on rollers. The resistance is provided using springs, along with other attachments for a variety of exercises and positions. I was told that about 500 exercises can be done on this reformer and I could not wait for my demo to understand more about this form of exercise.
The Pilates Studio is the brainchild of Namrata Purohit who is the youngest trained Stott Pilates Instructor at the age of 18. Her story leading to her love for Pilates is quite an interesting read. When she was 16 years old, she had a bad fall of her horse and had to undergo an emergency knee surgery. Post her surgery, she started rehabilitation but could only progress so much with the gym exercises when she was introduced to Pilates by her father, Sameer Purohit. Her new found love for Pilates helped her get back to her usual life and she underwent Stott Pilates courses to become the youngest Stotts Pilates fully trainer instructor in India.
This lead her to open the The Pilates and Altitude Training Studio in Mumbai which is also the first in the world to have a simulated altitude training room under one roof wherein you exercise under reduced oxygen levels thereby enabling one to burn 200 per cent more calories than under normal conditions.
Namrata Purohit is also a celebrity fitness trainer for Jacqueline Fernandez, Malaika Arora, Varun Dhawan, Arjun Kapoor including cricketers Abhishek Nayar and Dhawal Kulkarni and also the Official Fitness Experts to The Femina Miss India Pageant since 2011 and author of “The Lazy Girls Guide to Being Fit“.
Currently the Pilates Studio is run by Ms.Sheena under the able guidance of Namrata and her instructors where in the sessions are customised to each person’s needs and can be availed by anyone looking to take the step towards fitter and healthier life. Each session is designed as a 45 minute workout giving a choice of either individual or group sessions.
A small tête-à-tête with Ms.Purohit helped me understand more about this form of exercise and its benefits for post-Rehab, Pre and Post Natal individuals and also helps to address some of the most common concerns such as lower back, knee, neck and shoulder problems. It seems to be the only form of exercise recommended by doctors, rehab professionals and sports as it has been effective for their patients.
I have never done Pilates before though I have heard about this form of exercise. Post the launch, a group of friends and I decided to give it a try and booked for a session at the Pilates Studio. We were explained about the five principles of Pilates by an enthusiast instructor and thus began my very challenging ( I am a Pilates beginner recovering from a back injury) yet seemingly safe form of exercise. Through out the session, all muscles groups were targeted in a simple yet effective way working on own’s core. The focus is on quality of movement rather than quantity, with a balanced approach which ensures that no one muscle group is overworked.
Post the demo, I realized that I have some postural issues which probably need to be worked on. Never was I bored during the entire 45 min session as every exercise was unique and new in its own way. My thoughts when I leave the studio was that the session is quite a stress buster and I felt quite rejuvenated in mind and body, something which is difficult to understand until one experiences it.
For someone like me who loves to run, workout out with equipment and weights, I did realize that I can easily incorporate 2-3 session of Pilates a week, along with my normal fitness routine. This would only help me in proper alignment (something I seem to be having), flexibility (definitely an issue for me) and core strengthening. In case, you do not have the time for a combined approach as I mentioned above, Pilates can be done as a stand alone workout as well.
