Life has a funny way of coming a full circle and recently I had a sense of deja vu on those same lines. The last 15 years of my life has been dedicated to promoting products and ingredients for the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industry hence I am not a newbie to the requirements and advantages of using supplements in our daily life. One such experience was a being a part of the development team in making standardized herbal extracts and hence I understand the importance of research, testing and formulation to make that perfect product. For 9 years, I was also part of a team who sold minerals ingredients across the globe and the Nutrilite well known range of vitamins and minerals are quite familiar to me.
Amway as a brand needs no introduction and can be considered one of those brands whose is synonymous with almost every household in India. Being one of India’s leading FMCG companies who is well known for its Nutrition and Wellness products, the brand has now come up with a range of herb supplements under the legacy of the brand Nutrilite. The Nutrilite Traditional Herbs range comprises of 4 products including Nutrilite Tulsi, Nutrilite Brahmi, Nutrilite Ashwagandha & Nutrilite Amalaki, Vibhitaki, and Haritaki. This new range is specifically developed using Indian traditional herbs keeping in mind the nutritional requirement of Indian consumers.
While the need for supplementation has been stressed for a long time, it is only of recent that Indian consumers are realizing this need to supplement their diet. I must give credit where it is due as I feel the current generation is well aware that their daily food habits and lifestyle leaves a lot to be desired and the fear of being unhealthy and unfit has worked in their favour. So gone are the days when we need to educate people on the need but there is still a necessity to make them trust you and I feel that Amway has provided a very clear approach to this.
I had the chance to understand Amway’s approach to sourcing and manufacturing these herbal nutraceuticals through a talk given by their Category Head – Nutrition and Wellness, Mr.Ajay Khanna and a certified Ayurvedic doctor Dr. Kishore.
There are a host of brands available in the market which claim to be provide natural supplements but having worked in this industry I am aware of what kind of ingredients are being used to make these products. The question you should be asking is – What’s in my herbal supplement? The first and foremost step would be to research the species of the plant that would provide the final product. In most cases, this one step is an afterthought but if there is enough importance given to finding the right species and having a direct hold on the cultivation and picking process then I would assume that half the work has been done. Amway’s farms offer combined benefits of Organic Certified Herbs and DNA Fingerprinted herbs which is unique. Their seed to supplement approach definitely is one of a kind and hopefully will ensure other brands to take this process seriously.
In addition, the ‘Seed to Supplement’ journey of the manufacturing process focuses on the three key pillars of traditional herbs –Purity, Safety and Potency.
Purity: All herbs sourced are OneCert Asia Agri Certification Pvt. Ltd. certified and tested for safety, purity and potency under strict quality guidelines. As mentioned earlier, identifying the right species of the plant is essential and their novel approach named DNA Fingerprinting helps in identifying better quality species with active form and free from any kind of contamination/adulteration.
Safety: Nutrilite products are tested and formulated as per regulations by FSSAI under GMP. Their facility is also LEED Gold Certified.
Potency: All products are prepared from certified non- GMO sources. Extensive research has been done to extract the active ingredients from the plant to make the final product.
The new Nutrilite Traditional Herbs Range is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ vision, which reiterates Amway’s commitment to Govt.’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, as it is developed for the Indian consumers. The range will be manufactured at Amway’s state-of-the-art LEED ‘GOLD’ certified manufacturing facility located in the Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu.
Amway has entered the digital realm with this new launch and with the sole purpose of maintaining transparency, they provide a QR code on the product packaging that explains the ‘Seed to Supplement’ journey of the manufacturing process alongside highlighting the three key pillars of Nutrilite Traditional Herbs which is Purity, Safety and Potency.
Priced at INR 649 (inclusive of all taxes) for a bottle of 60 tablets for each variant, the new range is compliant to the new Nutraceuticals Regulations i.e. The Food Safety and Standards (Health Supplements, Nutraceuticals, Food for Special Dietary Use, Food for Special Medical Purpose, Functional Food and Novel Food) Regulations, 2016 (‘Regulations’), issued by Food Safety Standard Authority of India (FSSAI).
