Oh! Calcutta Presents the ‘Hilsa Food Festival’

She’s coming.

She’s traversing up the streams

Her excitement is palpable

She is soaring up the seas

She is going to meet her soul mate

She is flowing into the sweet waters

Creating a sweet love affair

She emerges. Here she is...

The Queen of Fish finally arrives.
At Oh! Calcutta.
Presenting the River Water Hilsa Festival!

As the monsoon arrives so does the tradition of celebrating the HILSA – the most sought after dish and the pride of Bengal.  And giving patrons the perfect opportunity to enjoy its distinctive, simplistic and quintessential flavours, Oh! Calcutta, the city’s popular Bengali restaurant, presents the ‘Hilsa Food Festival’

Hilsa, or Ilish, is a popular river water fish which flows in an upward fashion from the corners of the Arabian Sea all the way till the Bay of Bengal. Although, it has remained the pride of Bengal, it is a sought after delicacy and is slowly being celebrated and cherished all around the country. So what is the rage about Ilish? It has a distinctive taste, strong and delicious. It isn’t exactly an acquired taste but the ability to pick through the bones which dot the Hilsa flesh, is definitely an acquired skill. It goes without saying that no occasion is complete without serving Ilish.

Bringing together the ancient and classic flavours of the Ilish through a variety of exciting preparations, the exhaustive menu includes both, the evergreen timeless recipes like the Smoked Hilsa, an adaptation of a recipe from the British Raj, as well modern creations like the Ilish Fish Fingers.

The other mouth watering delicacies showcase the fish in various textures and flavours, with interesting pairings like the Bhapa Ilish (Steamed Hilsa), Mochar Ilish (Hilsa and Banana Flower), Ilish Paturi (Steamed Hilsa in Banana Leaves), Posto Narkol Ilish (Hilsa with Poppy Seeds and Coconut), Lal lonkar Ilish (Hilsa in a Spicy, Tangy Gravy) among many others.

It’s time to celebrate the grandeur of spices and the ambrosial goodness of flavours. So, have you fixed a date with the Queen of Fish yet?

Bengali can’t think a weekend lunch without hilsa. It’s our all time favorite. Specially during monsoon, we almost eat hilsa everyday.
